Research Paper Blog
For my research paper, I am researching the topic of prescription drug abuse. Some of the questions that I want to answer with my research are what age group abuses prescription drugs the most and why, what are some of the consequences, and what treatments are out there for this addiction. I plan on mostly using statistical data to show the different trends and scientific journals to show some of the proven consequences of prescription drug abuse. The method of research I will be using is analysis. I don't think enough would admit to abusing prescription drugs on a survey or interview for it to be an effective method and I don't think that people are going to let me sit and watch them abuse prescription drugs and they aren't going to do it out in the open. That leaves analysis as the best method for conducting research. Since I'm not directly dealing with people face to face, I don't have to worry too much about ethical considerations there, but when writing my paper, I'll have to watch how I word things so i don't generalize and say that everyone who takes prescription drugs abuses them.

Nice :) Where are you going to get said stats..the internet yes? I like the topic and it sounds like you will be able to find lots of info. Are you going to focus on a certain place, just the state of Michigan... the US...or the whole world? Even without talking directly to people you could find articles or studies that give an accountant of a prescription drug user or the people that treat them. You could also talk about maybe the media and the way that they portray those users like those anti- drug commercials with the kids stealing their parents meds. Sounds like you have a good start and topic, and don't let it mess up your birthday weekend! ;)
I think you have a very good idea on how you should go about and write your research paper. I do agree with you that you have to be careful with generalizing that everyone that uses perscription drugs do abuse them. You should look into some of the reasons why people do abuse these drugs and what drugs are commonly abused. You could also add in the age groups that have been seen to abuse drugs more commonly than others and why you might this could be. You have already had alot of great research in your other papers that you can use in this research paper and I think its going to turn out great!
Sounds really good. Wise choice with the analysis method. If you need to connect it to technology in anyway you can talk about how prescription drugs are thought to be such a great innovation but in reality they have many downfalls--including abuse, addiction, side effects, etc.
I would stay specific to perhaps college students. You can find out the percentage of college prescription drug abuse on campus and then relate it back to other findings and age groups etc. I would be thinking now how as a group we can relate all our topics back together too.
The topic seems to be a good one. I think though maybe if you did one survey just to mix it up a bit. I do not think that the survey should say something like "Have you ever abused prescription drugs?" People will not answer that question truthfully. But what if you did a survey that asked for more or less their opinion? Something like "Have you ever known someone to abuse prescription drugs?" or maybe if you find statistics on how many people are found to abuse prescription drugs per year do a multiple choice survey like "How many people per year do you think abuse prescription drugs? a)2 b)20 c)200 d)2000?" Or find in your research what the main reason people abuse these drugs is and do a multiple choice survey like that just to see how much knowledge people have on this subject.
I think your topic is interesting. I wonder if you know any doctors or RN's and get their opinions on the subject. My sister is a graduate RN and (and opinioniated one at that) I'm sure she'd have an opinion, if you are interested let me know!!
I wonder if the opinions would vary between them. I also think that a lot of people are probably addicted to prescription drugs and don't realize it. It seems you have a good topic and an organized plan of how to research... good luck on your paper!!
